I'll admit it--I like a good bargain! So every morning, I open my email to find a list of tempting "daily deals" from group discount coupon websites. Today I saw one from the "The Protein Bakery" in NYC. Being a fan of both protein and cookies, I had to look it up!To my dismay, The Protein Bakery brownies literally have more saturated fat AND sugar than a Starbucks double chocolate brownie--the Starbucks brownie is also higher in fiber than The Protein Bakery products!
I'm all for a functional food that is actually high in protein and fiber. The marketing behind The Protein Bakery deceives the American public, and distracts from the real health message--choose mostly fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein (low-fat dairy, lean meat, beans, etc.); enjoy a treat every now and then.
It is misleading to market these products as high-protein or healthful. If you choose to take advantage of this daily deal, please understand that The Protein Bakery products are desserts, and the majority are not high in fiber or protein (as defined by the FDA) .
What do you think? Is there a high-protein cookie or brownie product that is better? Are there other inappropriately marketed foods that drive you crazy?
